Eastingas

'Those who stand still are already dead.'

Overview

The Eastingas are a broad and resilient people of the eastern reaches, shaped by vast steppe-lands, harsh climates, and a way of life defined by movement and survival. Their culture is built around powerful clans and khans, where loyalty to kin and banner is paramount and leadership is earned through strength, cunning, and the ability to guide a people across an unforgiving land. Tradition is carried in song, custom, and blood, and adaptability is prized above rigid law.

In war, the Eastingas are masters of mounted combat, favouring speed, coordination, and relentless pressure over direct confrontation. Their riders strike swiftly, harassing and encircling enemies with arrows and sudden charges before withdrawing beyond reach. To outsiders they appear ruthless and elusive, yet among their own they uphold strict codes of honour, hospitality, and obedience to clan law. Eastingas warfare is a test of endurance and will, as foes are not crushed at once, but worn down until resistance collapses beneath the weight of constant motion.

Appearance

  • Skin: Skin tones range from weathered tan and bronze to deep sun-browned hues, shaped by generations spent beneath open skies and harsh winds. Those from the eastern plains often bear leathery, wind-scoured complexions, while steppe-born clans display darker, earth-toned skin marked by dust, sun, and long seasons of travel. Scarification, sun-lines, and old wounds are common and worn without shame.
  • Hair: Hair is typically straight or coarse, most often black or dark brown, though chestnut and ash-brown shades appear among some clans. It is usually worn long or tied back for practicality while riding, with styles favoring function over ornament. Greying comes early for those hardened by war and travel, and white-streaked hair is often seen as a sign of endurance rather than age.
  • Eyes: Eye colors are most commonly dark brown or black, with amber, hazel, or dark green appearing less frequently. Pale or unusually light eyes are rare and sometimes regarded with superstition, believed to mark those touched by fate or bound to unusual destinies.

Roleplaying

When roleplaying one of the Eastingas, emphasize pragmatism, vigilance, and loyalty to clan as a matter of survival rather than sentiment. Eastingas are raised to endure hardship and constant movement, learning early that adaptability and obedience keep a people alive. They value results over ceremony, strength over pride, and cohesion over individual glory. Speech tends to be direct and sparse, and respect is earned through usefulness and endurance rather than lineage or bravado.

Eastingas view the world as contested ground, where weakness invites destruction and hesitation costs lives. Honor exists, but it is measured by loyalty to clan law and the ability to protect and provide for one's people. Mercy is not freely given, nor is cruelty indulged without purpose. To live as an Eastingan is to remain alert, mobile, and prepared - always watching the horizon, always ready to move when survival demands it.
