Getting Started

Welcome to Death's Omen MUD. Before stepping into the world of Athera, you'll need a way to connect to the game and a basic understanding of what to expect when you first log in. This guide will walk you through your technical setup and first steps.

Choosing a MUD Client

To play Death's Omen, you'll need a program capable of connecting to a text-based server.

All of the following are free and commonly used:

Recommended Clients

  • Mushclient - Script-friendly with powerful plugins and triggers (Windows)
  • Mudlet - Modern interface, highly customizable (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • WinTin++ - Lightweight and fast (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • CMUD / zMUD - Older but feature-rich (Windows)
  • BlowTorch - For Android users
  • MUDRammer - For iOS users

Any of these will work. If unsure, use Mudlet.

Connecting to Death's Omen

  • Hostname: mud.deathsomen.com
  • Port: XXXX

Once connected, you will be guided through:

  • Creating your account
  • Creating your first character
  • Entering the starting area

If you have trouble connecting, visit the Discord Server where helpers can assist.

Your First Login

After creating your character, you'll enter the world at one of Athera's introductory locations. Take your time. Read your surroundings. Look, listen, examine - the game rewards patience and curiosity.

You'll also receive:

  • A starter description of your location
  • Basic starting gear
  • A new player introduction message

There is no rush - explore at your own pace.

Interacting With the World

A MUD responds to typed commands. Some common examples you can try immediately:

  • look - Observe your surroundings
  • look <object> - Examine something specific
  • say <message> - Speak aloud
  • emote <action> - Describe what your character does
  • inventory - View what you carry
  • score - View your stats and condition

Finding Help

If you need support:

  • Ask a Player Helper in Discord
  • Ask an immortal (staff) in-game via petition all
  • Read the New Player FAQ
  • Check the help command in-game (e.g., help speak, help combat, etc.)

Help is always available, whether you are confused by commands, lore, or mechanics.
